The Muskies 28+ improved to a .700 winning percentage from their previous 2005 season’s .380 winning percentage. The team undoubtedly owes their improved record to not being short on players at any game throughout the entire season. The Muskies played with 8 guys, some not even true teammates, in over 5 games during the trainwreck 2005 season. With the addition of 10 new players, 7 of whom played together during the previous season, the Muskies’ 19 man roster surprisingly worked out perfectly as the highest turnout of players at any game was the first game of the season, with 14 Muskies in attendance. The Muskies were also placed into a new division in 2006, playing in the National Division with the toughest teams in 28+ – the Rockies, the Knights, and the Orioles. The Muskies went 1-2 against each of these teams; one game against each was a close loss, one game against each was a total blow-out loss, and one against each was a close win. The Muskies ended up in 3rd place in this division, as well as in the entire 28+ league including the American and Patriot Divisions. The Muskies were the only team in the National Division that did not lose to a team outside of the division. Although the Muskies added 10 new players to the roster for the 2006 season, a Most Improved Player was awarded to Deron Anderson. Deron went through a rehab program for his arm and shoulder during the off-season, and came back in spring stronger than ever. Deron also moved from shortstop to second base for the 2006 season, and his strong arm and staunch defense were matched only by his improved hitting, going x for x with x doubles. Unfortunately, Deron could not make enough games to qualify for the playoffs, as his wife had their third baby right before the season started and he worked countless Brewer games that conflicted with the Muskies schedule. With such depth in the Muskies roster, selecting a most valuable player was difficult. Honorable mentions, however, are in order. First, Dean Roder stepped up to play infield (3B, SS, 2B) and catch, and also to pitch. Dean pitched especially well (stats), a much needed asset for the Muskies coming out of their 2005 season. Dean also batted X, going x for x and hitting x doubles, a triple, and a homer. Honors also go to future Hall of Famer Terry Teske, going x for x with X doubles, to Mark Rolison for his X batting average and 3 home runs, and to Dan Trivett for his X batting average and X RBI’s. The Muskies pitching staff also gets an honorable mention, as Jeff Mierow, Jerry Gambatese, Dean Roder, Chris Johnson, and Ron Bailey all brought it hard and all had excellent performances throughout the 2006 season. 4/23/06 Muskies 10 Royals 3 On a perfect day (70º and sunny) for an opener, the Royals scored 2 runs in the top of the 1st from a key hit by Jim Goodman and a throwing error by Muskies starter Chris Johnson. The Muskies took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd, compliments of Ron Bailey’s double and hits by Scott Keller, Jerry Gambatese, and DJ Haas. The Muskies racked up more runs in the 4th, 6th, and 7th innings, as Dean Roder, Keller, and Gambatese all scored after being walked and Bob Kurkiewicz hit a solo shot for his 1st homer since the 2005 playoffs. Ron Bailey finished off the Royals in the 8th in 9th innings for the save. W Johnson L Papez S Bailey Muskies: Teske 2-4, Kovnesky 2-4, Kurkiewicz 1-3 HR 5/7/06 Orioles 8 Muskies 3 An early season pitchers’ dual started the 1st meeting of National Division teams and then got interesting when the Muskies tied the game up by the 7th inning with the help of some doubles by Mark Rolison, Bob Kurkiewicz, and Chris Johnson. Jeff Mierow started for the Muskies and held the O’s to 5 hits while striking out 7; O’s starter Mark Brosseau performed equally as strong, giving up 7 hits and racking up 6 K’s. The O’s came out hard in the 8th inning scoring 5 runs, as a hit by Jon Bracket and a walk by Pete Jankowski set up for Tomsyck’s 3-run homer. Malnarick’s following hit set up for Knack’s 2nd homer of the game to put the Muskies away as Lenz closed for the O’s to get the win. W Lenz L Gambatese 5/21/06 Knights 3 Muskies 4 The Muskies quickly took the lead with a bases-loaded sac fly by Dan Trivett in the bottom of the 1st and in the 3rd capitalized off of a walk, an error, and then back-to-back singles by Mark Rolison and Trivett. The Knights scored in the 4th and 5th innings by some rips from the Thompsons and Decker to tie it up. Bob Lange led off the top of the 9th with a single, got to 2nd on a sac bunt by Chris Johnson, and then scored off of a hard hit ball to shortstop by Dean Roder that took a wicked hop over Travis to allow the go-ahead run. Roder then made an over-the-shoulder catch at deep 2nd base in the bottom of the 9th to save the tying run from scoring for the Knights. Both teams turned three double plays while Travis Thompson for the Knights and DJ Haas for the Muskies did excellent jobs in the infield. Randy Frank (Knights) and Johnson (Muskies) both went the distance, gave up no extra-base hits, and got out of some jams on the mound to keep the game interesting. W Johnson (CG) L Frank (CG) Knights: Travis Thompson 2-4, Brian Skornia 2-4, Randy Frank 2-3 Muskies: Dean Roder 2-4 RBI, Dan Trivett 1-2 3 RBIs 6/4/06 Red Sox 9 Muskies 13 The Muskies scored 14 runs on 18 hits and the Red Sox drove in 9 runs on almost a dozen hits plus good base running in only five innings before the time limit. Dean Roder threw well in his Muskies pitching debut and battled through some errors, as did Marx for the Sox. Dennis Panfil, Mark Rolison, Dan Trivett, and Chris Mielke all went 3-4 for the Muskies, while Bryan Koutsky went 2-3 for the Red Sox. W Roder L Marx Red Sox: Koutsky 2-3 Muskies: Panfil 3-4, Roder 2-4, Rolison 3-4 2 Doubles, Triple. Trivett 3-4, Mielke 3-4, Double 6/11/06 Muskies 14 Angels 12 Relentless hitting on both sides is the only way to describe this game. The Muskies racked up 12 hits, including a big blast two run homer by Mark Rolison, and took advantage of walks and errors. The Angels, led by Tieftenthaler, Dulde, and Grall, tore a punishing 15 hits off of Muskies pitcher Chris Johnson before Jerry Gambatese came in to finish up the last inning. Angels Dulde 3-4 Walk, Double; Tieftenthaler 3-5; Bower 2-4; Maek 2-4; Grall 3-4 Muskies Teske 2-3, Double, Walk; Gambatese 2-4, Double; Neubauer 2-2, Walk W Johnson L Grall S Gambatese 6/14/06 Rockies 3 Muskies 2 Andy Weidl (Rockies) and Jerry Gambatese (Muskies) went at it full throttle on the mound during the first National Division weeknight match-up of the season. Weidl racked up 14 K's and scattered 10 hits, giving up only 2 runs. Gambatese, on the other hand, allowed only 6 hits but was the victim of some untimely errors that allowed 2 runs to score for the Rockies. Although Terry Teske, Bob Kurkiewicz, and Chris Johnson each had 2 hits for the Muskies, 5 scattered singles and Weidl's 3rd inning yard were enough to squeeze the Rockies by for the win. W Weidl (CG) L Gambatese (CG) 6/25/06 Grays 1 Muskies 10 Dean Roder mowed down the Grays, recording 10 K’s and giving up only 3 hits. The Muskies batted around in 8 innings, with 10 hits and 11 walks and/or HBP’s and scored 10 runs. W Roder L Spence Trivett 2-3, Bailey 2-4 Triple, Haas 2-4 2 Doubles 6/28/06 Muskies 2 Knights 4 Travis Thompson and Jeff Mierow controlled this rain-delayed game from the mound, allowing just a few hits each while racking up the K’s. The Knights came out on top in the end, with offensive help from the bottom of the order. W Thompson L Mierow 7/9/06 Knights 14 Muskies 6 The Knights improved to 7-3 with a 14-6 win over the Muskies and moved within one game of first place. Michael Beringer, Steve Bundy, and Rob (Stinky) Williamson each had 3 hits to lead the offense for the Knights. All-Star Randy Frank picked up the victory for the streaking Knights. 7/16/06 Muskies 9 10 2 Orioles 8 12 1 The Muskies came out on top 9-8 over the O’s in 99 degree heat. Mark Rolison earned player of the game, going 2-4 with 2 bombs and making a great play in center field. Dean Roder relieved starter and newlywed Chris Johnson and stymied the Orioles' unmerciful hitting staff for the save. W Johnson L Bracket S Roder 7/20/06 Muskies 8 10 1 Angels 0 4 2 Jerry Gambatese pitched a 4 hit shut-out (10 K's) against the Angels to boost the Muskies record to 7-4. The Muskies bats, led by Mr. "3-4" Ron Bailey and big hits by Josh "Doc" Neubauer, Chris Mielke, and Mike Peterson, picked away at Angel's pitcher "Professor” Grall until the 6th inning. Peterson also dominated the infield with some excellent plays at short to earn co-player of the game along with JG. W Gambatese L Grall 7/23/06 Muskies 3 7 2 Rockies 12 17 0 The Rockies used a 6 run 6th inning to break away from a 3-2 deficit and go on to a 12-3 win over the Muskies. Andy Weidl pitched a 9 inning complete game for the Rockies giving up 7 hits while striking out 7 and walking five. Andy was also 2 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBIs and a run scored. 7/30/06 Muskies 15 Barons 4 8/2/06 Orioles 14 12 2 Muskies 4 8 2 The Orioles batted around and broke open a tightly contested game in the top of the 7th scoring 9 runs. Vic Shaw came up with a couple clutch hits. The O's played great defense behind David Crawford, who picked up the win with a complete game. 8/13/06 Cardinals 6 8 2 Muskies 7 7 2 The Muskies overcame the unyielding Cardinals in an 8 inning nail-biter to win 7-6. The Cards, behind a tough pitching performance by Dempsey, came out swinging in the 3rd inning with hits by Acevedo, Arnold, and a key 2-run hit by Reeves to gather 4 runs off of Muskies starter Mierow. The Muskies scraped up some runs in the first few innings and then took the lead in the 5th inning with hits by Neubauer and Anderson, setting up for Dan Trivett's big 2-run single. Both teams picked at each other for a couple more runs but Muskies pitcher Roder finished the 2nd half of the game and got out of some jams to get the Muskies their 9th win of the season. W Roder L Dempsey 8/16/06 Braves 1 6 0 Muskies 4 7 2 Muskies pitcher Jeff Mierow threw 7 strong, matching an equally tough outing by Braves pitcher Tom Wozniak. Wozzer threw well but did not get the necessary run support, as the Braves could not get the ball past the Muskies defense. Scott Keller's triple, Dean Roder's double, and Mierow's 2-run single fueled the Muskies offense. Roder relieved Mierow in the 8th inning to finish with the save. On a different note, Chris Mielke played an impassable defensive game at 3B while Mark Rolison put on a good show at 1B for the 9-man Muskies. W Mierow L Wozniak S Roder 8/20/06 Reds 6 9 2 Muskies 14 14 2 The Muskies unleashed with 7 hits and scored 9 runs in the 5th inning to win in 7 innings on a wasp-ridden Sunday afternoon at Madison. Dean Roder threw all 7 innings, while Kurt Sneide threw most of the game for the Reds. The Muskies bats were led by Chris Johnson (2-3), Chris Mielke (3-4), Mark Rolison (2-3), and Terry Teske (2-4), while Rick Dorgay went 3-3 for the Reds. W Roder L Sneide 8/22/06 Muskies 21 22 1 Royals 7 14 5 The Muskies offense cranked out over 20 hits with 7 doubles, and a 3-run homer by Dean Roder who fell short of a cycle by not hustling out what should've been a triple. Jeff Mierow started on the mound for the Muskies and was relieved by Chris Johnson and Ron Bailey later in the game. Jim Goodman went 3-5 for the Royals. Somehow all 9 innings were played. W Mierow L Papez S Bailey 8/27/06 Mets 6 11 4 Muskies 10 16 4 The Mets battled hard but were no match for the Muskies bats, namely Deron Anderson, Bob Lange, and Mike Peterson who all had multiple hits. Greg Fletcher and Danny Wuthrich played a stellar defensive game for the Mets, robbing the Muskies of multiple hits. Wuthrich, Vincente Ruiz, and Dan Raderman led the Mets offense with an impressive 3 hits each. Jeff Mierow relieved starter Chris Johnson in the 8th inning for the save. W Johnson L Raderman S Mierow 8/31/06 Rockies 3 6 1 Muskies 4 11 1 The Muskies topped the Rockies by one run in a 9-inning showdown to end their season at Zirkel Field. The Muskies were led by a dominating 8-2/3rds pitching performance from Jeff Mierow while key hits by Deron Anderson, Mierow, and Dennis Panfil's 2-run double gave the Muskies the bulk of their runs. Dave Geldnich pitched tough for the Rockies, but his team's scattered 6 hits were not enough to keep the lead. Dave Pangello and Bob Culver each had two hits for the Rockies, while Big Shootah Bob Kurkiewicz and Mierow both had 2 for the Muskies. Chris Johnson relieved Mierow with bases loaded in the 8th inning, allowed a run on a wild pitch, but finished the rest of the game for the save. The Muskies finished their regular season 14-6. W Mierow L Geldnich S Johnson Playoffs 2006 9/9/06 Royals 1 Muskies 9 Royals pitcher Argensinger threw 8 strong innings before the Muskies’ bats got warm, giving up only 5 hits in first 7 innings. Argensinger’s arm finally wore out as the Muskies loaded up the bases in the beginning of the 8th on a hit and a few walks. A few more hits and walks followed before the first pitching change when the Royals brought in Gawlitta. The Muskies smacked 4 more hits and gathered 4 more runs by the end of the 8th inning. Dean Roder, who started on the mound for the Muskies, came out in the 9th inning and retired the side to finish with a complete game, giving up only one run in the 1st inning off of Jim Goodman’s single. W Roder L Argensinger 9/10/06 Muskies 0 Knights 4 The Knights scraped up 4 runs off of Muskies starter Jeff Mierow by the 4th inning, taking advantage of some errors and bad hops with run-scoring hits. Mierow threw a very good game but had no offense to back him up as Knights pitcher Travis Thompson mowed down the Muskies lineup. Travis also put on a spectacular pre-game show and third baseman Rob Williamson provided the rest of the game’s entertainment. |
